COSMOS certification for Botanica
Botanica Natural Products is pleased to announce that they have received their newly issued COSMOS certification.
A COSMOS (Cosmetic Organic Standard) certificate is a certification awarded to companies in the cosmetics industry that meet specific requirements related to the use of organic and/or natural ingredients, environmental responsibility, and sustainable business practices.
The COSMOS-standard defines the criteria that companies must meet to ensure consumers that their products are genuine organic or natural cosmetics produced to the highest feasible sustainability practices.
To stimulate processes for sustainable production and consumption, the organic and natural cosmetics sector is using some simple rules governed by the principles of prevention and safety at all levels of the chain from production of raw materials to the distribution of finished products. The COSMOS-standard is guided by these four core principles:
- Promoting the use of products from organic agriculture, and respecting biodiversity.
- Using natural resources responsibly, and respecting the environment.
- Using processing and manufacturing that are clean and respectful of human health and the environment.
- Integrating and developing the concept of green chemistry.
This Standard was developed at the European and international level by BDIH (Germany), COSMEBIO & ECOCERT (France), ICEA (Italy) and SOIL ASSOCIATION (UK) who are the founders of the COSMOS-standard AISBL (an international non-profit association registered in Belgium) in order to define common requirements and definitions for organic and/or natural cosmetics.
This Standard applies to cosmetic products and raw materials intended to be used in cosmetic products in two scopes:
- Scope 1: Certification of organic and/or natural cosmetic products, raw materials with organic content, base formulas;
- Scope 2: Approval of non-organic raw materials that can be used in certified references according to scope 1.

Botanica Natural Products holds COSMOS certification for the following raw cosmetic ingredients:
- Avocado oil
- Baobab oil
- Grapeseed oil*
- Kalahari melon seed oil
- Marula oil
- Moringa oil
*Our grape seed oil is only COSMOS natural approved. This raw material can be used in COSMOS NATURAL certified finished products, but not in finished products certified with the COSMOS ORGANIC label. This is because the Appendix VI ingredients are available in enough quantity as organic certified grades, and it is important to value organic products in an organic label.

Our non-organic raw materials are compliant to the standard COSMOS Version 3. These cosmetic ingredients include avocado oil, baobab oil, grapeseed oil, Kalahari melon seed oil, marula oil, and moringa oil.
